The African philosophy of life Ubuntu means: I am because we are! True to this motto, the Kenyan-based social enterprise Ubuntu Life offers sustainable employment, particularly to mothers of children with special physical and educational needs. This includes the full-time employment of over 80 people in the Kenyan town of Maai Mahiu and over 200 part-time jobs for Maasai Maker Mums in the Ngong Hills. All employees have health insurance (which is definitely not common in Kenya) and receive a living wage that is well above the market average. About half of the Ubuntu Life team have been able to buy their own house or land through their work and thus break the cycle of poverty. The Ubuntu Life Foundation also supports the development of the children through special educational measures and paediatric healthcare.
