Excursus linen (flax) in EthiopiaSabahar has only been processing the natural material linen since 2016. Although Ethiopia grows large quantities of linseed (flax), the plant is only used for the seed and further processing into oil. As it is not yet possible to produce linen yarn from flax in Ethiopia, Sabahar imports the high-quality yarn from Europe and India. Linen is one of the most sustainable materials from which textiles are made. All parts of the flax plant can be processed after harvesting. Flax is also extremely resilient and requires little irrigation when grown in dry soils. Chemical fertilisers and pesticides are not required.

The fair trade company Sabahar from Ethiopia specialises in the production of fine clothing and home accessories made from natural fibres. All products are handmade in Ethiopia. Kathy Marshall, a native Canadian who has lived in Ethiopia for 20 years, founded Sabahar in 2004. Her passion for preserving Ethiopia's rich weaving tradition, combined with her desire to create respectful and ethical work opportunities for marginalised people, laid the foundation for the company. The company philosophy is divided into three areas: Sustainability, Innovation and Caring for each other.
